Infrared and mental health.

An alternative yet effect approach to manage positive mental health could be as simple as regular use of infrared sauna and light therapy.

The use of infrared is rapidly rising with many people now understanding the physical benefits of using infrared saunas, however, research also shows there is also evidence that it can improve mental health.

How can mental health benefit from using IR Saunas?

· Reduced Anxiety, Stress and Depression Infrared saunas have been shown to optimise the production and reception of the natural antidepressants in our brain, dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin. It can also lower levels of cortisol in the body (stress response).

· Pain Relief and chronic condition management

It’s natural to feel low when managing pain or a chronic condition. Sitting in an infrared sauna causes your endorphins to be released, which is your body's natural pain medicine. Infrared Saunas can also help to reduce inflammation in your body, helping to relieve joint and muscle pain.

· Improved Sleep Sleep plays an important role to our wellbeing and mental health. Infrared can improve quality of sleep.

· Boost Overall Brain Function Infrared Saunas help to improve blood circulation throughout the body. Improved blood flow to the brain helps to boost overall mental alertness and peak productivity as well as increasing overall energy levels.

Infrared and Seasonal Depression

Infrared is effective to treat seasonal depression, some saunas offer the addition of chromotherapy light therapy, light wavelengths can also positively impact mood and are particularly effective of the treatment of seasonal depression, (sometimes referred to as SAD). The different colours and shades have a unique impact on various elements of wellness – the concept of light wave therapy is that each colour provides energy to boost mental and physical health.

As the colder/darker months approach it is natural for mental health and mood to dip, our bodies naturally crave heat and light for energy, an infrared sauna can step in as a replacement when levels are low.

How often should I use to see wellness benefits?

As with any therapy, consistent use yields consistent benefits. We recommend using the sauna in regular concession, as regular as time and budget allow of course, to help get the best out of your studio sessions, we have recently introduced our loyalty scheme to support and encourage our users in consistent/regular use. Our users find a regular schedule beneficial to manage a range of conditions as well as a form of self-care; regularity depends on your own needs. We recommend using that time to meditate, switch off and unwind, the great thing about infrared is you reap many health and wellness benefits for both body and mind in one sitting.
